I read Guy Vanderhaege;s collection of short stories largely because I loved his three novels involving the West. Nobody does the isolated man nearly as well as he does and no one catches the atmosphere of former times better. If you're a fan like I am, you will like " Man Descending" which among other things reveals a wonderful sense of humour, particularly in the story " The Drummer".
Forget those Canadian writers the elite critics promote and read Vanderhaege who is Canada's best living writer.

I have to give this collection of short stories a few stars because they are very well written. However, the subject matter is invariably depressing and the characters unpleasant and uninteresting. Take your choice of juvenile delinquents, dying old men, unemployed bums who think their wives should support them while they write great novels, louts who mistreat their wives or girl friends, etc, etc. You should be young when you read these. Once you're older life is too short to be made depressed, no matter how capably you are made depressed. The author's novels are better.
I cannot believe no one has reviewed this book. Perhaps it's because Guy Vanderhaege is Canadian. In any case, this is probably the most impressive collection of short stories I have ever read in my life. They are fantastic - I can't say enough about this gifted writer.
