Naoki Urasawa 20th Century Boys Vol 1 Friends Naoki Urasawa 9781591169222 Books
This manga...is awesome! I can hardly remember the last time I felt THIS confident about the merit of a manga series only 1 volume in. Besides just my gut feeling, I expect it to continue to be awesome due to the fact that it's already completed its run in Japan (22 volumes) and has won the Kodansha, Japan Media Arts, and Shogakukan Manga awards. Not to mention that Naoki Urasawa is one of the rare and few manga artists in Japan that has the power and ability to pull off a series like this. This series is going to be a masterpiece that falls together one little piece at a time. I can't help but admire series where almost every action has a meaning that plays in the background and eventually all these separate actions fall together to reveal a grand finale. I can't believe how well the author strings together so many stories without confusing the reader. I had been getting into too much of a rut lately with the manga I read (typical shonen/shoujo titles) and this series was a perfect wakeup call.

Naoki Urasawa 20th Century Boys Vol 1 Friends Naoki Urasawa 9781591169222 Books Reviews
One of my all-time favorite mangas, 20th Century Boys is illustrated and written by the incredibly talented Naoki Urasawa, author of other famous works such as Monster and Pluto. I would highly recommend this read to anyone. I received the graphic novel in a timely manner and the book was in excellent condition. Thank you!
This volume was better than the first . The mystery of the friend was set firmly in the audiences view . The cults sinister abilities was set as well . This was the issue that hooked me . This is a must read for not just manga lovers but lovers of story
If the first volume didn't bind you to this series then the 2nd one will, by the last page of volume 2 this series completely owned the highest admiration I can give a manga series. It evoked a lot of emotions from me without being cheap about it. No I didn't cry, I'm just invested in the future of all the characters and can't wait to see what lays in wait for them all. I'm going to start reading Monster now (also by this author) while I anxiously await the upcoming volumes. The only negative about this series is the price, but to be honest for something this good...the $12.99 retail price doesn't bother me one bit because this series is SO WORTH IT!
Only a few volumes deep, and I can comfortably say the 20th Century Boys is the most engaging manga, or graphic novel of any type, that I've read thus far. The character designs, personalities, dialogue, suspense, and effective transitions between the present time and the protagonists childhood memories are executed so smoothly. My respect goes to the translators as well for truly bringing this story to life for us English speakers. A true masterwork.
Great introduction to a awesome concept . I am a long time anime watcher but this is my first manga purchase . I'm glad I chose this one . This story has a relatable protagonist . A terrible threat to humanity is presented . I love the idea of what happens when a adult tries to make a childhood game real . I will read the series to the end if it's this good .
The story continues in 2019 (I think) aka year 3 of the Friendship Era. The world has been ravaged by the Friend's virus. Tokyo is a walled city where the Friend has recreated the Japan of his childhood and the brainwashed soldiers of the Global Defense Force patrol the streets looking for alien invaders, a category that includes dissidents and people who watch uncensored TV.
We catch up with a few returning characters and through a flashback see the nightmarish days of the plague when neighbors killed each other for the vaccine.
This book could have been gloomy and depressing but Urasawa sprinkles in signs of hope throughout to keep things lively.
After 17 volumes and 1000s of pages of story 20th Century Boys has yet to disappoint! An excellent read from start to finish.
I absolutely love this series, I read it many years ago and am now collecting the printed volumes. Naoki Urasawa is a master of his craft. This is a great sci-fi/adventure story with plenty of action & suspense.I highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of his other works (Monster, Master Keaton, etc).
